Oz pirates worth $10K each!

p2pnet.net News:- The Business Software Association of Australia (BSAA), a clone of the BSA (Business Software Aliance) run by the likes of Microsoft and Apple, is offering “software pirate hunters” a heavy bounty for the heads of “anyone dobbing in illegitimate users of business applications,” as Australian IT phrases it.

Each ‘pirate’ is now worth $10,000 instead of $5,000 because,BSAA boss Jim Macnamara is quoted as saying, the organisation, “had realised that the old $5000 bounty was below international standards,” conceding that claiming the reward was not an easy process, says the story,

Australian IT doesn’t say exactly what “international standards” Macnamara had in mind.

“Rather than simply identifying pirates, informants were required to sign affidavits and ‘be involved in a legal process,’ Mr Macnamara said. Such proceedings could take some time, he said.”

It seems Oz police haven’t been quite as obliging as forces in other countries, which often drop normal tasks such as solving robberies and murders, to answer the calls of the entertainment and software cartels.

“The Australian Federal Police lacked the resources to effectively enforce Australia’s copyright legislation, he said,” states Australian IT, adding:

“Australia had yet to see any criminal cases for software piracy, but had participated in several US-led actions.”

In the US the reward scheme is as high as $US 200K, and there are reward schemes in UK and Sweden as well – see http://www.pcprofile.com/get_your_reward_here.htm
