Google ‘lie detector’ software

p2pnet.net News:- Google’s Eric Schmidt says within five years, his company will have a "truth predictor" to tell us when politicians are lying.

We don’t really need this kind of application because to paraphase an observation normally applied to lawyers, "If a politician’s lips are moving, he’s lying." And the same could, of course, be said of many (most?) of our captains of Net-based corporations, as well as the music, movie and software cartels.

"Politicians have yet to appreciate the impact of the online world, which will also affect the outcome of elections," Schmidt said, according to Reuters, quoting the Financial Times. "One of my messages to them (politicians) is to think about having every one of your voters online all the time, then inputting ‘is this true or false," the story has him saying.

"We (at Google) are not in charge of truth but we might be able to give a probability."

Britain’s The Sun says the Google sooth-sayer, "wowed the Tory Conference with his vision of the future for the Internet" with such gems as,"For centuries access to information – and the ability to communicate it – has been controlled by the wealthy and the well educated."

But now, "The Internet changed all that. It has broken down the barriers that exist between people and information, effectively democratising access to human knowledge."

He’s correct but sadly, Google’s own application of this democratising process stops dead at the Chinese border.

With "Do No Evil’ as the company maxim, where once it proudly boasted, " Google does not censor results for any search term" and, "We believe strongly in allowing the democracy of the web to determine the inclusion and ranking of sites in our search results," it now declares:

"It is Google’s policy not to censor search results. However, in response to local laws, regulations, or policies, we may do so."

Meanwhile, "Again and again, people forget that the internet is pervasive and they try and hold back information when the internet makes everything available," Silicon.com has Schmidt saying, also quoting him as stating, "the internet can, and I hope will, be a revolutionary force in repressive societies".

He should know because Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are named in Britain’s Committee on Foreign Affairs Seventh Report for actively working with Chinese censors to police the Net.

And finally, "he won his biggest reaction from the audience when he made a joke about blogging," says the story, to wit:

"Most blogs have precisely one reader – the blogger themself."

Schmidt wishes.
