YouTube and UMG make up

p2pnet.net News:- YouTube and Vivendi Universal are now firm friends. And that’s official.

Recently, the giant French record label, a founder member of the Big Four Organized Music family which is trying to sue consumers into buying over-priced downloads, said YouTube, “consistently violates” music industry copyrights, hinting at possible legal action.

Now, however, UMG and YouTube have reached an accord, they say.

Under it, “UMG broadly embraces the power and creativity of user-generated content, allowing users to incorporate music from UMG’s recorded music catalog into the videos they create and upload onto YouTube,” say the two companies.

“UMG and its artists will be compensated not just for UMG produced videos but also for the unique, user-created content that incorporates UMG music.”

With the deal comes a DRM CC package. DRM is short for ‘digital restrictions management’ and CC means ‘consumer control’.

“YouTube and UMG have also agreed to a process to protect UMG copyrights using technology to filter out UMG content that is not authorized to appear on the YouTube service,” say YT and UMG.

Only a moron would want to purchase YouTube, declared Mark Cuban recently. And industry pundit Josh Bernoff thought it was only a matter of time before YouTube was, “faced with a potentially crippling copyright-violation suit from the entertainment industry”.

However, their views notwithstanding, Google is reportedly wondering if buying YouTube might be a good idea, the figure $1.6 billion being mentioned, and with EMI, Warner and now Vivendi already on board, expect an announcement from Sony BMG any day, now.

Meanwhile, wonder how long it’ll be before YouTube users start getting subpoenas?

Stay tuned.

Update:

It seems Sony BMG jumped the bandwaggon almost before the ink was dry on the YouTube/UMG deal.

YouTube announced it’s reached agreements with CBS, “as well as Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment,” says the
CBC, adding:

“Sony BMG Music said it will also make video content available on the site and permit YouTube users to include some songs from its catalogue in their amateur videos. Sony BMG Music will share ad revenue with YouTube for all videos that integrate any audio or video from the Sony library.”
