‘High risk’ criminals web site
p2pnet.net News:- Saskatchewan is to join Alberta and Manitoba with a web page giving details of “high-risk criminals”.
And Saskatchewan justice minister Frank Quennell says he’ll ask other Canadina provinces to follow suit when he attends a meeting of justice ministers in Newfoundland this week.
“Getting tough on habitual offenders, especially sexual ones, is a movement that has gained strength on the Prairies over the summer,” says the Canadian Press.
Alberta was the first province to create a high-risk offender website in 2002 and Manitoba followed, says the story, although, “The concept of plastering high-risk offender mug shots on the internet is controversial.
“While many support the idea as something that allows people to take an active role in their personal safety, critics feel that such a public disclosure could lead to vigilantism.”
CP has Quennell saying it might be best if each province manages its own site.
“It could be co-ordinated by the federal government,” he said. “It may be best done through co-operation among police services and certainly there would be a major role for the RCMP.”
