Sony battery fiasco continues

p2pnet.net News:- Sony’s troubles springing from its dangerous batteries continue to multiply.

It’s recalling up to 60,000 power packs, and this time they’re used in its own Vaio notebooks sold in Japan. The move is to, “alleviate customer concerns about overheating,” as well as 30,000 battery packs for Vaios sold in China, says MarketWatch.

The batteries are the same as the ones used in laptops made by Dell and Apple Computer, both of whom have have pulled in millions of Sony-made battery packs because of risks to users.

Lenovo and Toshiba have also announced recalls and Toshiba is now thinking about suing Sony, says The Times Online.

It fears the dangerous Sony batteries might taint the Toshiba brand, says the story.

“The response will be a demand for compensation, and may take the form of a damages lawsuit – a relative rarity in corporate Japan,” it says.

Sony’s difficulties have been compounded, “by spiralling costs linked to PS3 delays,” says another The Times Online story.

It’s already already slashed the console’s price by a fifth in Japan, “ahead of its planned launch there next month, amid fears it will struggle to compete with cheaper rivals from Microsoft and Nintendo,” says the story.

The console’s launch in Europe has been pushed back to March, after Sony met trouble in manufacturing the Blu-ray DVD components which will be included in the machine.

Sony said in a statement this morning: “We are in the process of determining whether a revision to our annual earnings outlook is necessary, taking into account various factors that could affect our group earnings.”

…Toshiba is now thinking about suing Sony…

I wonder if this has anything to do with HD-DVD Vs. Blu-ray since the batteries in the Toshibas don’t actually go boom:

    From:
    http://news.com.com/Toshiba+joins+massive+recall+of+Sony+batteries/2100-1041_3-6121127.html

“…A Toshiba spokesman said the company does not think there any safety issues regarding its PCs using Sony-made batteries, but it will recall them anyway to alleviate customer concerns. He added that Toshiba is not likely to pick up the tab for the recall….”
