Microsoft frees up VHD
p2pnet.net News:- Virtualization software lets you run multiple operating systems simultaneously and with that in mind, Microsoft now says you can use its Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) for free and without a license, and it won’t sue you.
Microsoft virtualisation software has been available for more than two years, “but as computers become more powerful the use of virtualisation is expected to mushroom,” says The Washington Post, adding:
“The company’s specifications will be made available to anyone who wants to use them under an ‘Open Specification Promise,’ introduced last month.
“The company said the license was “an irrevocable promise from Microsoft”.
The promise is similar to other pledges not to sue over patents, and it allows developers to create software based on the Virtual Hard Disk format without fear of infringing on Microsoft patents, company executives said, states CNET News.
“This is Microsoft’s personal promise to any individuals or organizations in the world that they can use patented technologies that could be in this VHD technology,” it has Jean Paoli, the company’s manager of interoperability and XML architecture, stating.
