New York City, MPAA, ‘piracy’

p2pnet.net News:- You know how the multi-billion-dollar Big Six movie studios, Sony, Time Warner, Viacom, Fox, NBC Universal and Disney, which continue to report mind-boggling revenues, are being ruined by file sharers?

Well, according to their wholly owned MPAA, the Big Apple (not that one, the other one) is responsible for 43% camcorded DVDs tracked in the US, and 20% of “pirated” movies seized globally.

The MPAA doesn’t explain how it arrives at these numbers, but that’s normal. The mainstream media will report it as thought it’s factual anyway.

Meanwhile, re-phrased, thanks to the continuing efforts of Sony, one of the MPAA’s owners, lest we forget, and other makers of mini video recorders, more ‘home movies’ were shot in New York City theaters than anywhere else, says WorldScreen.com.

So, “New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre, and Broadcasting (MOFTB) are working with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) on an anti-piracy initiative that will cover legislative efforts as well as a series of PSAs,” says the story.

New York will cobble together legislation, “to amend the penal law so that those engaged in piracy will face a class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison if convicted, and a class E felony, punishable by up to four years in prison, for any subsequent convictions,” says the story, going on:

“The MPAA and NYPD will now employ a new tool to combat piracy. Similar in design to the City’s Trademark Counterfeiting Initiative, the MPAA, NYPD, and Office of Special Enforcement (OSE) will work together to identify buildings in New York City where suspected DVD piracy operations are located. Once those buildings are identified, the city will begin legal actions against landlords or owners who knowingly allow piracy operations to remain on their premises.

“Additionally, the City will work with the MPAA to create and implement a public service campaign to educate New York consumers about piracy. The campaign, which will include print, radio, television, and Internet public service announcements, will be financed by the MPAA in consultation with the City.”

In other words, expect to see New York’s finest in hot pursuit of kids with camcorders, and existing Hollywood ‘educational’ dross supplemented with other self-serving MPAA efforts.

Meanwhile, rumours that New York scouts will soon join Scouts in Los Angeles to help keep Hollywood profits up and Big Six cats fat and happy are true.

However, other rumours that Scouts and Girl Guides will soon be able to earn Rifle and Hand-gun Recognition patches to supplement the new Intellectual Property merit badges and will also be licensed to carry weapons to support MPAA/NYPD/OSE anti-piracy operations, should be treated with caution.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

don’t go after murderers, rapists, terrorists and drug dealers… go after kids who camcord movies and put them on the web to share. They aren’t even making any money.

if they want to focus on something, go after the places that copy and sell DVDs for profit. Those are the real pirates.

    Arrrrrr
