Tiny, new iPod shuffle

p2pnet.net News:- A new $80 Apple iPod shuffle, coming in at about half an ounce, less than half the size and of iPod shuffle #1 and able to carry up to 12 hours of music, or 240 songs, is due on the shelves on November 3.

Charge and sync with a USB dock and, “Operate its controls with one hand,” says Apple.

Of course, you’ll only be able to play songs pre-approved by Apple’s Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) consumer control system. But then, you can’t have everything —– not as far as Apple is concerned, at least.

But it’ll still be a winner.

====================

UPDATE:

As various people have pointed out by email and in comments below, I was wrong to say this latest Apple gadget is DRM-laden.

The problem is: every time I think Apple, I think iTunes, DRM and consumer control.

My apologies to Apple, and to everyone else.

Show the average consumer a non-Apple player that uses simple drag-n-drop in Windows Explorer and they realise just how restrictive iTunes is.

As you say though it’ll be a huge hit amongst people who can’t afford the overpriced iPods, although in an ideal world these people would shop around and find a perfectly good non-Apple player for half the price.

Of course you can play any old MP3’s and AAC’s. And of course you can just drag them onto the iTunes window, and of course you don’t have to store them inside iTunes. You must think 60 million iPod customers are all idiots!

Jesus H Christ, when will you people Check your facts!

The ipod will play music from virtually any source except WMA files. The most common source on iPods is music from Compact Discs. You can play AAC, MP3, Aiff…etc

To Say: “Of course, you’ll only bel able to play songs pre-approved by Apple’s Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) consumer control system”
    is absolutlely false!

The iPod was the number #1 selling MP3 player in Canada years before the iTunes music store was even available. What were we listening to..dead air?

    200 dollars for an Ipod.

40 dollars for a Creative Zen MP3 player.

    You tell me ?

Yes, iPod is crap. All you pay for is the name.

I’d really love it if people would start to realise that there is infact more to a product than functionality.

The vast majority of people, if not all, are impacted hugely by brands or a product’s general image. If they value this, then is there anything wrong paying more for it?

” I’d really love it if people would start to realise that there is infact more to a product than functionality. ”

The weakest minded among of have been successfully programmed
via advertising to ‘realize’ that image is MORE important than
    functionality or quality.

“The vast majority of SHEEPLE , if not all, are impacted hugely by brands or a product’s general image. If they value this, then is there anything wrong paying more for it? ”

    Fixed it for ya :)

If you are willing to pay that much more, simply on the basis
of a name brand, then go for it :)

I don’t own an ipod, but the statement that it only plays DRM songs is inaccurate. It seems simple to me, if you buy songs from itunes, you have to deal with drm, if you load it up with mp3’s that you have ripped from cd or dl’d from p2p, then you avoid apple’s DRM.

  9. Reader's Write Says:

    Yes. Yes they are.
