p2pnet.net News:- You’re sitting in the park with your brand new NFC AVP (audio-video phone). Next to you is your friend, who’s using his smart-touch handheld to remotely surf his favourite indie 10-cent download sites, powered by the various commercial p2p companies.

He scores, his handheld transfers his dime to the dl site, you touch his computer with your AVP and seconds later, you’re sharing the music.

In September, 2002, Royal Philips Electronics and Sony Corp announced a “strategic cooperation” deal under which they teamed up to develop wireless near field radio-frequency communication technology (NFC) which would enable short-range transfers between devices equipped with an NFC interface.

NFC would allow mobile phones, digital cameras and PDAs as well as PCs, laptops, game consoles, and so on, to swap data – including high quality images, with all that implies – across distances of up to twenty centimeters by simply pointing them at each other.

Put another way, “The consumer’s primary NFC device (e.g. mobile phone or PDA) acts as a smart-key to gain access to chosen services from any NFC device, anywhere, anytime,” said Philips and Sony in 2002.

Then Nokia joined the club and the three have just announced the birth of the non-profit NFC Forum.

“The addition of the world’s largest mobile handset vendor as a founding members of the NFC Forum will make it possible for consumers, for instance, to download data or pay for digital services through an NFC interface by moving an NFC-equipped phone close to a TV or set-top box.,” says EE TimesUK here.

All potential applications can be handled by having two NFC-enabled devices close together, or by flashing an NFC-capable mobile phone to NFC-embedded devices or objects, it says, going on that the rganization will become official within the next two weeks.

The founders are already in talks with “a long list of companies,” including various handset vendors, consumer electronics manufacturers, PC vendors, service/content companies and chip vendors, says EE TimesUK.

Potential NFC applications include:

Displaying a picture, originally received as an MMS message on a mobile handset, onto a big-screen TV, when a handset is close to the TV.
Wireless transfer of information and downloaded services between consumer devices, handsets and PCs.
Purchasing digital rights to download certain programs via a contactless credit card or a mobile handset featuring an NFC chip.

Philips’ NFC partners include Visa International, and Vivendi Universal is also expected to join the Forum,, says EE TimesUK.
