Microsoft’s 3D Virtual Earth
p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft has taken the first step in what could, and probably will, become a serious challenge to Google’s for-the-moment dominant satellite mapping service.
Or, we should say, the first 15 steps. Because it’s launched a 3D Virtual Earth as a “more compelling” alternative to Google Earth, says The Seattle Times.
“Photorealistic” images of San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Detroit, Phoenix, Houston, Baltimore, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, currently populate the service, says the story.
But it plans to produce 100 cities by next summer, says the East Bay Business Times.
However, Bill and the Boyz aren’t just doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. “Microsoft said it intends to sell advertising on virtual billboards in the virtual cities,” adds the story.
Neither report says when, or if, Microsoft, plans to have 3D Virtual Earth take in cities outside of the US.
