EU gets tough with Microsoft

p2pnet.net News:- The European Commission has given Microsoft a deadline for complying with the EU March, 2004, anti-trust decision.

Thanksgiving Day in the United States.

Neelie Kroes, the EU’s anti-trust chief, told the Guardian newspaper Microsoft had until then to reveal the relevant information about its Windows operating system, says The Washington Post.

“Microsoft could face a fine of up to 3 million euros ($3.85 million) a day it if failed to comply,” it says, going on that Kroes told the Guardian she’s growing tired of waiting for Microsoft to meet her demands.

“I don’t have eternal life,” she said in an interview.

Microsoft was originally told to provide the information by July 2004.

But, “Microsoft missed that and subsequent deadlines,” says The Register. “Because of this, the commission imposed a penalty of €280.5m (about $358,840,030 today) for non-compliance from the 31 July 2006. Microsoft also faces fines of €3m a day (about $3,837,861 today).

“Anti-virus companies have complained that Microsoft has failed to provide enough information for them to ensure their products interact properly with Vista.”
