Of DVDs and contact lenses
p2pnet.net News:- Wal-Mart Stores has now officially launched its online music store.
It’ll be peddling tired Big Five ‘product’ at .88 cents a pop. But that’s a bit cheaper than the rest of the corporate online music gang who are mostly flogging their product at .99 cents a track.
The world’s largest retailer says for the next two months it would be the exclusive supplier of songs from artists carried by Big Five label Curb Records, states a CNN Money report here.
Hooray hooray.
“A Wal-Mart spokeswoman did not immediately return a call seeking comment on whether the music service is profitable,” says the story delicately, pointing out that, “Apple’s song service loses money.”
Even if the Wal-Mart sold 100 million songs (the unachieved Apple goal), “that would add up to just $88 million -insignificant for a company that recorded nearly $260 billion in revenue last year,” says CNN, adding:
“Wal-Mart is the dominant force in U.S. retailing, but it was relatively late to the dot.com world and has been adding online services in hopes of boosting its Web presence. It recently started offering contact lens prescription and DVD rental services.”
