Vista and the Yawn Factor

p2pnet.net News:- Today is the New Day for Microsoft and minions will try to convince businesses around the world the new Windows Vista is polished enough to get excited about. Ditto for Office 2007 and Exchange Server 2007.

But “Vista adoption is going to be a disaster,” BusinessWeek.com has Roger Kay, founder of the research firm Endpoint Technologies Associates, predicting.

He believes Vista will account for just 5% of corporate PC sales in the first quarter of 2007, says the story, going on:

“He thinks that will climb to 10%, 15%, and 20% in the succeeding three quarters. All told, that translates to about 20 million PCs, a fraction of the roughly 160 million computers that businesses are expected to buy next year. Even companies buying new computers will look for PCs loaded with the existing XP software.”

Nor is Office 2007 likely to ramp up much faster, says BusinessWeek.com.

And, writing in The Globe & Mail, “With Windows Vista, Microsoft may be realizing that the IT industry is maturing to the point where launching an OS is not in and of itself that big a deal – can you imagine a worldwide launch event for a new stove?” – asks ITBusiness.ca Shane Schick.

” Although word processing and e-mailing represent the most common PC activities after surfing the Internet, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007 are simply variations on some very old recipes. If Microsoft wants to ensure its OS remains the market leader, it’s going to have to spend more time promoting the independent software vendors that can show businesses how to cook up something new.”

So will Bill and the Boyz be able to contend with the Yawn Factor?

And when Vista becomes generally avalable in a couple of months, will they be able convince ordinary folks it’s way better than XP, about which they made such a long and loud song and dance?

Stay tuned.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

    Reasons to upgrade to Vista

    - You have too much free space on your Hard Drive
    - Your computer is running too fast.
    - You just HAVE to play the latest version of Halo
    - You get an uncontrollable urge to pirate something and need tpm and other DRM to protect you from yourself
