SOCAN’s latest
p2pnet.net News:- SOCAN is throwing its weight around again.
SOCAN is short for Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada and that means every time a song owned by one of its members is played anywhere for any reason in any context, it expects to hear a cash register ringing.
Now it’s after after Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, “for refusing to pay SOCAN tariffs for the public performance of the underlying music, a separate fee from the other fee musicians or their labels would be receiving for the event,” says Digital Copyright Canada’s Russell McOrmond.
“Whether there is a live musician doing their own work or doing covers, or someone playing recorded music in the background, SOCAN claims a right to get a cut,” he observes.
SOCAN = Soak Canada.

The key to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s best defense may be the way the so called performance rights organizations (PRO) operate everywhere. The PRO’s license songs from all over the world, they say, but do not say on paper which songs are included in the license.
Dumb eh!
Dumber yet is to pay for such a license.
Even dumber, the copyright lawyers and judges have not noticed. Really?

“SOCAN is short for Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers”
Why woud Composers and Authors form an alliance with their mortal enemy, the publishers?
