Security holes in MS Word
p2pnet.net News:- Bill and the Boyz say they’re checking out reports of possible ‘zero-day’ attacks which could occur because of a hole in:
- Microsoft Word 2000
- Microsoft Word 2002
- Microsoft Office Word 2003
- Microsoft Word Viewer 2003
- Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac
- Microsoft Word 2004 v. X for Mac …
… as well as Microsoft Works 2004, 2005, and 2006.
For an attack to be triggered, “a user must first open a malicious Word file attached to an e-mail or otherwise provided to them by an attacker,” says Microsoft.
Is a patch nigh? It doesn’t say.
Meanwhile, in much the same way anyone who’s worried about Internet Exlorer can try Mozilla Firefox 2, people who use MS Word might now think about replacing it with OpenOffice, a totally free multi-platform and multi-lingual office suite and open-source project that’s compatible with all other major office suites, say its developers.
