Switching to Vista may be costly

p2pnet.net News:- Upgrading from Windows XP to Vista Business will cost $200, but that may be only the half of it.

The Vista upgrade carries a hardware cost of about US$100 in new or additional PC components, “required to make the jump to Microsoft’s newest operating system, according to research firm iSuppli,” with much of the additional cost going into memory, says DigitTimes, going on:

“According to iSuppli, an average desktop PC running Windows XP contains components that collectively cost PC OEMs slightly more than US$500. For an average PC running Vista, the cost will jump to slightly more than US$600, a 20% increase. Because this figure represents the cost of the components and not the actual price of the PC, users will pay significantly more than US$600 to buy a Vista-ready machine due to the PC makers’ added margins.”

Bill and the Boyz say 512MB of DRAM will be enough for Vista, but, “iSuppli believes at least 1GB will be required for optimal performance and for headroom for upgrades,” says the story. “This will amount to a doubling in memory costs per PC, according to iSuppli.”

And that’s not all, DigitTimes continues.

To use the 3D functions found in Windows Vista’s interface, all users may need to upgrade their graphics capability, although, “Vista allows users the option of disabling the 3D interface, eliminating the need for a new graphics card or a more powerful integrated graphics chip.”

Meanwhile, a report commissioned by Microsoft suggests Vista will, “contribute $US70 billion to Microsoft’s US partners during its first year of release”.

i’d be upset if i didn’t have to upgrade a 500$ computer to use vista.. it would mean they didnt update enough shit especially the gui.

I am glad to see a change coming because to many people as is, have outdated machines.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

maybe all those outdated machines should start using Linux and skip Vista!

There really is no need to switch to Vista just yet. Especially so if you are using a 32bit setup. There isn’t much stuff out there maling use of the 64bit architecture either. All Vista does is add a few fancy bells and whistles and more DRM. DirectX 10 will be hacked to work on XP too I reckon. I plan on upgrading soon but will stick with XP.
