Korean mobile Net platform
p2pnet.net News:- A coalition of major South Korean companies says America is being unfair when it asks Korea not to develop its own mobile Internet platform as a national standard.
The Federation of Korean Industries had a joint meeting on Korea-US trade issues with government officials and, "pointed out the disadvantages of developing multi-standards for an [sic] wireless Internet platform in a country, which the U.S. government has demanded," reports the Korea Times here.
Designating a wireless Internet platform for interoperability (WIPI), a homegrown open-source technology, as a single national standard, would benefit everyone involved, "including mobile phone developers, service providers and consumers," the report quotes Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) researcher Kim Heung-nam as saying.
Korea’s position n otwithstanding, "the U.S. government recently called again for the Korean government to allow foreign competition in standards for the mobile Internet platform during two-day bilateral trade talks in last month," the story goes on.
US pressure on the WIPI is "based on the demand of Qualcomm, the California-based mobile chipmaker, which developed its own platform called binary runtime environment for wireless (BREW)," the Times has Kimsaying:
"We even called for Qualcomm to participate in developing the WIPI in a bid to solve the issue, but the company declined the offer."
