‘Major’ Google, NASA deal

p2pnet.net News:- The NASA Ames Research Center has announced a media briefing for today to discuss a, “major announcement involving Google”.

It’s a Space Act Agreement, says NASA, without giving further details.

But, “NASA’s announcement may relate to a 2005 memorandum of understanding (MOU) it signed with Google for development of part of Moffett Field,” says CIO. “The MOU calls for Google to develop up to 1 million square feet of NASA’s allotment at their site.”

“Adaptive re-use of historic buildings is being planned and implemented by NASA at Moffett Field,” says NASA.

Moffett Field was closed as a military base on July 1, 1994, and supervision of Moffett’s many facilities, two runways, and three aircraft hangars was turned over to NASA Ames Research Center and NASA which, “now operates Moffett Field as part of NASA Ames Research Center,” it says.

It’s also close to Google’s HQ in Mountain View, California, observes CIO, adding, “Google construction on to the former naval base would offer it tax advantages if it chose to expand in the Mountain View area. By building at Moffett, Google would be exempt from state and local property taxes, as the site is on federal land.

“The MOU also has Google working with NASA for ‘large-scale data management’ and ‘massively distributed computing.’ The two operate a website on which employees of the two companies can share information and comment on collaborative efforts.”
