CBS re-opens CBS Records

p2pnet.net News:- CBS says it’s going to revive the CBS Records music label to market and distribute new music.

Is this in recognition of the fact that, thanks to the Net, all kinds of fantastic new music is now available?

Although it’s dressed up that way, the true motivation is the emergence of what the biggies believe is The Future, namely, online video.

“An emphasis of the new label will be to build awareness for CBS Records’ artists and songs by integrating music into CBS television series,” it says.

“In unveiling the new entity, CBS also announced plans to make songs, music videos and other music-related content from CBS Records available for purchase and download at the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com).

Meanwhile, “CBS Records will build a select roster of artists from the limitless ranks of independent musicians who write and perform their own songs with an initial focus on digital distribution of their content,” it says, adding:

“In addition to the iTunes Store, the music will be offered through www.cbsrecords.com, as well as other agreements with online and wireless providers that will be announced at a later date. CBS Records will also offer physical distribution through partnerships with outside companies.”

One Response to “CBS re-opens CBS Records”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

“CBS Records will build a select roster of artists from the limitless ranks of independent musicians who write and perform their own songs with an initial focus on digital distribution of their content,”

I hope that performers who support the CBS strategy should be aware that what CBS plans is an strategy whereby, first, the songwriter-performer must give away his/her song rights to CBS in order to be allowed to work as a performer, and second, the songs will not be performed by other performers that work for CBS and perhaps other record companies who also want to use only songs they control and do not want to use songs controlled by competing record companies. After all who wants to increase the profits of the cmpetition by sending tem song royalty paymets.

It is not to an performer’s advantage that he or she be limited to using his or her own’s songs. Many performers are not songwriters and need to use the song of other songwriters.

It is also an anti-songwriter policyand will cause a downward trend in song quality.

Music history has shown that there have been good performers who have been good songwtiters (or the other way around) but these are exceptonal cases. Most good performers are not good songwriters.

Dood question here are, why should businesses or record companies determine the repertoire of performers? Shouldn’t performers have independence to choose what they are, what the perform? Shoulds door be shut on performes who prefer to perform other songwriter’s songs?

Enough said about a lousy idea, for both performers and songwriters.
