NASA, Google, team up

Earlier today we did a post on the upcoming NASA / Google collaboration.
At the time, neither of the two were saying much beyond the fact it was happening and details would be announced today.
Now some of the details are in and boiled down, they amount to a huge marketing and advertising triumph for Google.
It and the NASA Ames Research CenterCenter say under a Space Act Agreement, they’ve established a relationship, “to work together on a variety of challenging technical problems ranging from large-scale data management and massively distributed computing, to human-computer interfaces”.
Collaboration areas include incorporating agency data sets in Google Earth, focusing on user studies and cognitive modeling for human computer interaction, and science data search, “using Google features and products,” they say.
Real-time weather visualization and forecasting, high-resolution 3D maps of the moon and Mars, real-time tracking of the International Space Station and the space shuttle may be added as and when.
NASA and Google also are, “finalizing details for additional collaborations that include joint research, products, facilities, education and missions,” say the two.
Rumours that Google marketeers will shortly take over as the White House press officers should probably be discounted.
