‘La toile’ in French elections
p2pnet.net News:- France is the most “blog-savvy” country in Europe, and that’s going to be reflected in this year’s French presidential elections, says Reuters.
“Once in the Internet slow lane due largely to the popular Minitel, an information service accessed from home via the normal telephone line and a dedicated terminal, France has caught up fast,” it says.
Now, “10.6 million French homes of a total of about 26 million are online, of which 9.1 million have a broadband link, making ‘Internautes’ – Internet users,” according to the story, which quotes Ipsos Mori.
Candidates, “seek to harness the Internet’s vast but volatile resources to give them a decisive edge,” says Reuters.
“Frontrunners Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy issued their New Year’s greetings on the Internet in sharply contrasting formats, underscoring their different approaches but confirming the Web – ‘la toile’ in French – as a political battleground.
“Ifop poll late last year showed 12 percent of surfers watch political videos, a potential audience of 2-3 million that could prove significant in a race that opinion polls suggest will be close.”
