ITU isn’t after the Net
p2pnet.net News:- Asked about repression of online freedom of expression, including in China, “Freedom of expression is a question of content-editing, which is beyond the mandate of ITU,” Hamadoun Toure, the new director-general of the International Telecommunication Union, declared at his first press conference, says Associated Press.
“ITU does not deal with the content of the Internet, but it has to be involved in the security of the network,” he said.
Toure, who became last November, was talking at his first press confernce.
It wasn’t his intention to take over governance of the Net, Toure said, according to AP. “There is no one single issue that can be dealt with by one organization alone.”
Some critics say the US has too much control over ICANN and countries such as Iran and Brazil have argued that the Internet should be managed by the United Nations or another global body, says Reuters .
But, “I don’t think it is in the mandate of ITU and as secretary-general I will continue to contribute to the debate over Internet governance and continue to provide technical support,” it has Toure, an electrical engineer from Mali, stating.

I would not be surprised if China said the Internet should be managed by global body
