Furtado producer in trouble?

p2pnet.net News:- Did Timbaland steal music from a Finnish musician? That’s the appearance.

Janne Suni has not been contacted by Timbaland or by Geffen Records and has to this day not seen a single cent in royalties or compensation. To hear the complete trackplease go to http://tinyurl.yeqknw.

That’s the end of a YouTube post containing a track from both.

“Timbaland most probably ripped of a Finnish demoscene artist,” said Lehti in an email to p2pnet. “Is the record company going to get away with it? Well most probably!”

On Side-Line:

I got a mail from a Side-Line reader referring me to something that kinda shocked me. Apparently the wellknown producer Timbaland or one of his assistants has ripped off another track to use it in the song ‘Do it’ on the latest album ‘Loose’ by the Canadian singer Nelly Furtado. Part of the track is clearly stolen from a c64 conversion of an Amiga mod made by the Finnish demoscener Janne ‘Tempest/Damage’ Suni once you have seen and heard the evidences given in the above video.

In today’s Side-Line post:

We were tipped off that Timbaland actually sold a reworked ring-tone of the actual Amiga .MOD-file adding a new drumbeat on it but following the pattern of the original file. It has been sold as a ringtone since 2005 under the title “Block Party” (check here). We posted a video of this above. As a result it looks like it that several bands will have to check if Timbaland didn’t illegally use files on their songs as well. Suni from his side says he does not have the resources to sue Timbaland in court. David vs. Goliath ?

And on the Something Awful Forums, “To explain, in 2000 at Assembly, one of the biggest demoparties in Finland, Tempest competed in the so-called ‘Oldskool Music Compo’, a competition ment for music on old platforms like Amiga, c64, ZX-Spectrum and the likes,” says okkie, going on:

His entry ‘Acid Jazzed Evening’, a 4 channel Amiga .MOD won the competition. For your convenience I converted the mod to an mp3 which you can get here. The original .MOD file you can get from Scene.org

.

A c64 musician called grg remade the song on the c64 (using the infamous SID soundchip) which is what Timbaland used for Furtado’s song. I also converted this SID to mp3, which you can get

is a 40 second clip of Nelly Furtado’s track ‘Do It’.

He literally stole the whole musical line to build this song around. I talked to Tempest and he told me that it’s no use going to court, eventhough Scene.org supplied papers saying the song got uploaded on their servers in 2000. Fighting a big corporation like Geffen costs tons of money and time, which he does not have.

It’s all kinda sour, to know that Furtado and Timbaland make a buckload of cash using a tune that was released for free. So the least I could do was to post about it on the internet and let people know.

Stay tuned.

(Thanks, Lehti)

I didn’t envision the Something Awful crowd would give a rat’s ass about the actions of pop music producers given their general hostility towards almost all popular music in general.

This remind me of the Chef Aid episode of South Park. I always wished that I would never see that kind of scenario played out in real life. I bet Geffin is going to sue this guy on the grounds that he could have made the song AFTER they used it, not before, just like in the episode.
