Meet Wikipedia ‘Wikiseek’

p2pnet.net News:- A really useful search engine built to for scouring the Wikipedia is slated for official beta release tomorrow, but it’s online now.

“The contents of Wikiseek are restricted to Wikipedia pages and only those sites which are referenced within Wikipedia, making it an authoritative source of information less subject to spam and SEO schemes,” it says.

Ironically, there isn’t yet a Wikipedia entry for Searchme Inc, the company behind Wikiseek, which isn’t to be confused with the Wikiasari, the Wikipedia’s own ad-based search engine.

Meanwhile, “Wikiseek utilizes Searchme’s category refinement technology, providing suggested search refinements based on user tagging and categorization within Wikipedia, making results more relevant than conventional search engines,” it says.

It also has a search plugin for FireFox, IE7 and Opera, as well as a Firefox extension with a ‘WikiSearch’ button for the search box.

“Wikiseek is based on proprietary technology developed by Searchme, which utilizes the suggestions of tens of thousands of vertical search engines to deliver more highly relevant searches,” says Searchme. “The result is a faster, richer Wikipedia search experience.

The Firefox extension upgrades Wikipedia`s search engine to the faster, more relevant Wikiseek engine, states the company, going on that it’s available under a GPL open source license, “contains no advertising and works exclusively with the Firefox browser”.

On topof that, the Wikiseek web site is accessible from any browser and features keyword ads, says the company, promising, “Wikiseek will donate a majority of the site’s advertising revenue to the Wikimedia Foundation

“The service is expected to have significantly less Search Engine Optimization (SEO) spam because only ‘authoritative’ pages, approved by Wikipedia editors, will be included,” says Searchme

I was not aware that the one included with Wikipedia’s MediaWiki software was somehow inferior and was not doing its job. Not to mention the fact that, if MediaWiki’s engine fails, you can use an embedded Google or Yahoo! search for the same material.
