MS CE 5.0 preview: April 1
p2pnet.net News:- It’s not a joke.
April 1 is indeed the official date for a preview of the next major version of Microsoft’s Windows CE 5.0.
Formerly code-named Macallan, it offers built-in support for dual-mode mobile phones, which can make high-speed data connections on both cellular and wireless LAN networks, says Microsoft.
It will be the company’s, “newest and most advanced real-time embedded operating system for rapidly creating the next generation of 32-bit smart, connected and small-footprint devices such as consumer electronics, gateways, industrial controllers, mobile handheld devices, IP set-top boxes, VoIP phones and thin clients,” it states.
A preview kit will be downloadable from the Windows Embedded Web site and anyone wanting to take CE5 for a drive will have to register for a product key.
Microsoft says the release focuses on reducing device manufacturer development efforts by providing efficiency features such as:
- Development environment enhancements, which increase developer productivity
- Built-in, extensive driver support, which enables out-of-the-box interoperability with multiple hardware platforms
- Integrated innovation through advanced multimedia capabilities, including Direct 3D Mobile, which enable graphically intensive and rich media experiences for end users
- Incorporated Windows Error Reporting, which allows you to simply and transparently identify operating system and application-level vulnerabilities after device deployment
- Automated testing scenarios, which test the stability and reliability of the operating system image and applications in a single toolkit
Microsoft says CE 5.0 will ship “with all components automatically set to the highest possible security setting while providing developers with complete flexibility to modify the security setting as needed for their unique design”.
The new Windows Error Reporting enables quality and performance monitoring for in-field devices so OEMs can continually improve and update devices they have already deployed, says the company, adding that an enhanced Windows CE Test Kit provides comprehensive automated testing tools.
