Apple AirPort Extreme slow down

p2pnet.net News:- In some parts of the world, Apple’s $200 AirPort Extreme may not be as extreme as promised.

The company’s decision to use both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidth for its new 802.11n-ready AirPort Extreme wireless router will limit achieveable speeds in Britain, Japan, Austria, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Slovakia, and Spain, says Macworld.

“In the US the new AirPort Extreme is up to five times faster than its predecessor,” says the story.

But in the countries listed, it’s only 2.5 times faster, the reason for the lag being regulatory restrictions prohibiting wide-channel operation, it goes on, stating the restricted wide-channel operation is 40MHz found in the 5GHz frequency.

“An industry source explained the implications of this to Macworld,” te post states: “The 802.11n standard offers a bandwidth frequency that determines how much speed you will be able to achieve. This is either 20MHz or 40MHz, with 20MHz being 2.5x faster than 11g and 40MHz being 5x faster than 11g. I suspect that in the UK Apple’s device is only able to use 20MHz because it is illegal to use the 40MHz bandwidth when using the frequency of 5GHz.”

And, “Most venders haven’t adopted this frequency so they can use 40MHz and hence get the full 5x 11g speed,” said Macworld`s source

  1. Reader's Write Says:

The fact is the product is 5x faster. If your government chooses to limit your ability to obtain that speed sorry about your luck – elect a new government or live with the heavy handed government oppression that limits innovation and technology.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Heed the call comrades. Rise Up! and cast asides the shackles of 40MHz oppression.
