Microsoft targets UK firms
p2pnet.net News:- Immediately on the heels of the official launch of Vista, Microsoft, a member of software industry enforcement unit the Business Software Alliance (BSA), says it’s, “hoping to “spark off the engagement” with customers using unlicensed MS software.
For the moment, only UK companies will be targeted, PC Advisor has Ram Dhaliwal, Microsoft’s UK licensing programs manager stating.
Bill and the Boyz used to contact companies by phone or email, wanting to turn up on the premises to “audit their software,” says the story, going on that audit and “asset management” teams also can, “look for ways the company can save money,” according to Dhaliwal.
Now, “if Microsoft doesn’t receive a response after 14 days, the company will send a succession of three ‘escalation’ letters over three weeks,” says PC Advisor. “The last two letters warn the case could be turned over the BSA, which could pursue legal action.”
Microsoft is going after firms with around 250 PCs in the initiative because, “Companies of that size often have problems with using incorrectly licensed and counterfeit software, Dhaliwal said.”
