IBM Open Client offering

p2pnet.net news:- “IBM has a new open client offering that runs on Linux, Microsoft Windows and, later this year, the Apple Macintosh, and which is supported by services from IBM, Red Hat and Novell.”

That’s it in a nutshell, and the news comes in an eWeek post which goes on that customers will be able to choose technologies and applications from IBM and some of its business partners.

“These include IBM productivity tools that support the Oasis Open Document Format, the Firefox Web browser, Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino, Lotus Sametime and IBM WebSphere Portal v6 on the Red Hat Desktop Linux suite, and the Novell SUSE Desktop Linux,” says the story.

IBM says now big businesses can offer employees a choice of running Windows, Linux or Apple Macintosh software on desktop PCs, using the same underlying software code, states Reuters.

“This cuts the costs of managing Linux or Apple relative to Windows,” .

The company will use the software, “initially to run some 5 percent of desktop computers across its own organization, which employs around 320,000 staff worldwide,” says the story, adding:

“Customer call centers and software development groups in Brazil, India, Europe and other IBM offices will take part. Pockets of Apple Inc. computer users within IBM also will be supported for the first time by Open Client.”
