CRIA vows to fight on

p2pnet.net News:- The CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) will “continue to fight widespread infringement of music copyright on the Internet,” says its boss, Brian Robertson.

He was reacting to the stinging defeat suffered by the CRIA’s owners, the Big Five record companies, following a Canadian Federal court ruling which means Canadians can continue to share music online over p2p networks.

Robertson says unlawful file sharing “is devastating the entire music community,” although a newly released analysis says the effect of downloading on sales is “statistically indistinguishable from zero“.

In the meanwhile, Robertson’s use of the word ‘unlawful’ marks an interesting counterpoint to statements routinely made by Cary Sherman, president of the RIAA (Recording Industry Associaton of America) who likes to say file sharing in general is illegal, without bothering to qualify the observation.

Be that as it may, “We put forward a compelling case of copyright infringement in seeking these disclosure orders,” states CRIA general counsel Richard Pfohl.

“We presented more initial evidence than has ever been put forward in a request for disclosure of user identities from ISPs – which Canadian courts have granted on numerous occasions.”

He didn’t go into detail about the cases or the circumstances. However, it’s certain they would have had nothing to do with handing over the names of people the music industry says are sharing music online without its permission – the subject of the motion Justice Konrad von Finckenstein dismissed.

Im sorry if the recording artists like Britney Spears, P-Diidy and others will only make 5 to 10 million off record and promotional sales. The fact is small bands have a way of putting thier music out there now without being screwed by the record companies as well no body wants to pay 15.00 a cd for 1 or two songs.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

poor music and bad attitude, to say nothing of that lotto look of monopolistic greed – that’s why I don’t buy cds…
and that’s statistically significant; definitely their own fault…
but it’s fun watching them get both feet in their mouth – i’m just waiting for when they shoot themselves in the foot now!
    P-}
you can’t stop us you relix – remember me? remember ‘relix’?
    i’ll visit again, too…lol
    HAR!

  3. Reader's Write Says:

Well said Anonymous Coward, the real pirates of music industry are the Big Music Companys who have a legal liecense to steal from the bands and consumers.

    F*ck you CRIA!

I’ve been boycotting buying music for almost a year now. I used to buy 3-4 CD’s a month and I was started buying more when Napster came out. Once I found out how crooked the record labels are I stopped buying and unless they apologize to the people they sued and give them their money back I will never buy music again.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

THE SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WORLD. This decision will be the basis for legal opinions in cases heard around the world, and will effectively kill all File sharing cases being fought in courts, The RIAA has not been to court with an actual case since it started this insane madness, they have settled outside of court in every instance. I’d love to see someone or some organization go the distance in a court of law in the U.S. to effectively determine the legal status in the United States. The intelligent thing for all companies involved in litigation over music downloading to do is, drop all the cases before the courts, and apologize for their stupidity. The losses they must be suffering over this persecution of their customers must be staggering, and it would be a first step in restoring confidence in the music industry.

In our small family combined,we would buy around 4-5 cds a month. When the recording industry decided to go after there customers with law suits we got together and agreed that we wouldnt buy any more cds period. Its been 5 months or about 20 less cd sales for the record industry . How many other small familys are doing the same thing. Hmmmm I wonder why there sales are down.

  8. Reader's Write Says:

Well said! I adopted exactly the same stance last year. I stopped buying CDs and i won’t buy any ever again, until this organisation that tries to cause panic and terror to millions of people, apologizes and compensates all those people that it has walked all over.

And I cannot believe how much the record companies have so many politicians in their back pocket. I thought that we lived in a democracy. But it seems that if you have a big enough pocket book, you can buy new laws.

But file sharing won’t go away. It is hear to stay.

  9. Reader's Write Says:

I found CD prices were too high and never bought CD’s anyway, even before file sharing was an option. I love music but the cost of a CD is just too high for me… (the actual production cost is $3.00)

If file sharing was 100% illegal and they were actively coming after offenders it may force me to stop downloading… but I still won’t buy CD’s…

If there was no file sharing, I would not have music to listen to.

    Can’t anybody spell any more??

I agree with the judge. These people make 2 much money and have to much influence in society as it is, and now they want to tell us what we can and cannot do on the internet.
Cry me a river because some pour sap is not getting his royalty. Welcome to the real world you over paid entertainment types. Boo hoo people are copying there stuff. Go out and get a real job then and stop bothering us if you don’t like it.
Better yet charge more 4 ur concerts and personal appearances. Hopefully they’ll price themselves out of the market and that will make room 4 real entertainers.
Brian Robertson can kiss Canada’s proverbial ass… they guys’ a schamm artist from wayback…
