Microsoft settles Iowa case

p2pnet.net news:- Microsoft is paying $330 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by users in Iowa.

Lawyers were paid about $59.4 million, according to court documents, says Associated Press.

The six users who brought the case received $5,000 each, it says.

Meanwhile, the plaintiffs said Microsoft’s monopolistic and anti-competitive conduct caused them to pay more for software than they would have if there’d been competition, says the story.

Microsoft denied the charges, saying the Iowa customers had received quality products at fair prices.

Bill and the Boyz have now faced 206 class-action lawsuits across America since 2000, says AP, pointing out only two, the Iowa case and one in Minnesota, went to trial.

The Minnesota case was settled about two months into the trial, says the story, continuing, “Both sides agreed the settlement will include making money available to buy computers and software for Iowa schools.”

“The court will be advised of the terms of the settlement in April and there will be a hearing on April 20 for preliminary approval and if all goes as scheduled there will be a hearing for final approval on Aug. 31,” AP has Microsoft attorney Rich Wallis saying.

I believe the rest went to buying software and computers for Iowa schools.

I wonder if that was a straight % off the top for the amount awarded for the lawyers. Of course this is the only reason lawyers would even consider going up against MS.
