Cisco gives Apple more iPhone time
p2pnet.net news:- Cisco is clearly eager to strike a deal with Apple over the latter’s use of the iPhone trade name, which it’s been using since the beginning of the year when Steve Jobs officially announced the coming of the new mobile.
“Given Apple’s numerous requests for permission to use Cisco’s iPhone trademark over the past several years and our extensive discussions with them recently, it is our belief that with their announcement [at the Expo] today, Apple intends to agree to the final document and public statement that were distributed to them last night and that addressed a few remaining items,” said Cisco just after Jobs made the announcement. “We expect to receive a signed agreement today.”
The agreement didn’t arrive, Cisco sued Apple and soon afterwards, gave it extra time to respond.
Apple had until today to do the necessary, but it seems Apple again failed to follow through and Cisco has now further extended the not-so-deadline, giving Apple another week, says Associated Press, going on:
“Cisco, whose Linksys division began shipping a line of iPhones last spring, has said it would allow Apple to use the trademarked name but wants both companies’ phones to be able to communicate with each other. It has not provided details of such interoperability.”
Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris has been quoted as saying Cisco’s trademark claim is “silly” because several companies use ‘iPhone’ and, “Cisco’s U.S. trademark is tenuous at best [because it's being used by others]. We’re the first to use the iPhone name for a cell phone.”
