iPhone trademark fight over
p2pnet.net news:- The argument between Apple, which has been using Cisco’s iPhone name without permission, and Cisco, which owns the trademark, now appears to have been settled.
The two say they’ll share the name with each applying it to products sold around the world, says the Financial Times.
Who won? Apple, which emerges unchastised for its trademark violation, and which has garnered all kinds of free iPhone PR, or Cisco, which is presumably in effecting renting the name for an undisclosed amount for an undisclosed period of time?
As the FT points out, "Apple has long preferred closed, proprietary systems, which lock customers into using Apple hardware and software. Music bought from the Apple’s iTunes online music store, for example, will not play on music players other than Apple’s iPod."
With that in mind, the deal represent a, "concession on the part of Apple, which had originally resisted calls to make the iPhone compatible with other companies’ hardware," says the story.
Meanwhile, "With Google being one of Cisco’s biggest customers, and Google CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt on Apple’s Board of Directors, could a potential Google backlash been on John Chambers’ mind when agreeing to end the iPhone lawsuit?" – wonders ITWire.
