Google kit takes on MS, IBM

p2pnet.net news:- Google is treading on the toes of IBM and Bill and the Boyz with an online suite which includes e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets and calendar management.

The expansion, slated to be unveiled today at an annual fee of %50 per user, “threatens to bog down Microsoft Corp.’s efforts to persuade businesses to buy the latest version of its market-leading Office suite that was developed along with its new Vista operating system,” says Associated Press.

It also challenges IBM’s Lotus Suite, says the story.

Google has been offering a free version of Google Apps for six months, but the pay-for version, Google Apps Premier Edition, has five times more email storage, as well as a guarantee that all services will be available 99.9% of the time with around-the-clock technical support, says AP, going on:

“Google also is adding mobile access to e-mail accounts through the BlackBerry devices that tether workers to their offices.”

Google Apps Education Edition, a free version for educational institutions, has the same features as the premier edition except for the storage size, says ZDNet News, adding:

“There is also Google Apps Standard Edition, which is free, but lacks the features of the premier edition.”

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

“The expansion, slated to be unveiled today at an annual fee of %50 per user…”

50% per user is quite a bargain! So it only costs a forearm and a shin?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Jon pressed the wrong key. It’s supposed to be $50.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

All very well and good, but just how much info will be held by google and how secure is it?

Would you want to see your next invention patented by someone else because they were able to haxxor googles systems and gain access to your documents?
