RIM says DRM is ‘messy’

p2pnet.net news:- Research In Motion’s Jim Balsillie says changes are on the way for how music downloaded, and his firm, which makes the Blackberry, will be at the front of the pack.

The current system using DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) consumer control is messy, 570News.com has him saying.

But Canada’s RIM has the answer. Its, “current communications framework provides it with a huge advantage over such competitors as Apple in that it can provide both the business end of communications, as well as the consumer aspect of it,” according to Balsillie who says RIM has a natural advantage over companies like Apple, states the Globe & Mail.

“Apple has done us an enormous favour by saying you should expect music on your cellphone,” the story has him saying. “[But] I think it’s 10 if not 100 times harder to do the communications aspect onto an MP3 player than to do the mass media player onto a communications framework.

“I think we’ll absolutely nail it before some new entrant comes even close. You know, everyone’s brave in the locker room. Let’s get it done.”

But Balsillie’s decision to, “publicly criticize DRM” won’t please the members of the Big 4 Organized Music cartel, says the story.

They sell more than 70% of the world’s music and say the technology is, “essential for combatting online piracy”.
