Fox to sell prime-time series

p2pnet.net news:- Fox Broadcasting says it’s making certain prime-time series available for download from 200 of affiliated stations at $2 per episode, and between $20 and $40 for full seasons.

The plan is an expansion of Fox On Demand launched last October and which, “offered only ad-supported streaming of episodes on sites such as Fox.com, MySpace and Fox’s O&O stations,” says MediaPost.

Fox stations will, “offer a brand new version of the Fox on Demand player that allows viewers to either stream shows online or purchase video downloads,” says Variety.

“Fox on Demand – which will be supported on Macs as well as PCs – also includes a metadata engine that will enable the net and affils to offer targeted ads within the player,” says the story.

“Also, visitors to Fox.com will be prompted to type in their ZIP code – shooting them to their local Fox affiliate Web site. Net execs believe the majority of Fox affils – at least 200 – will sign on to the Fox on Demand service. Fox Interactive has installed an extensive geofiltering program to make sure users are downloading programs from their own affiliate’s site and not one from another market.”

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

I smell a solution looking for a problem here. And what’s all this about locking people into their local affiliate? Isn’t that anticompetitive?

  2. Reader's Write Says:

If not anticompetitive it will at the least continue to perpetuate the problem of people turning to the internet to bypass deficiencies in their service from local affiliates. What’s going to happen when a certain market chooses not to carry a particular show? People will just download it for free instead of paying a nominal fee to download it from the central fox site! The whole point it to move away from local market control and service, not towards it!

2$ for an episode or 40 for the whole season? And only a file. No hard copy. Still the best way is torrents and/or buy the actual dvds when they come out. To have to pay 2 bucks and still get ads. Aint gonna happen. Im sure they will get a few people at first.

Hey honey? hey kids? our show is on lets all sit in front of the computer screen!
