Samsung hybrid disk drive
p2pnet.net news:- Better late than never, and still aiming to cash in on Vista, Samsung Electronics says it’s started shipping its 2.5-inch hybrid flash/hard drive.
“Samsung has worked with Microsoft since 2003 to develop the hybrid drive to save power consumption and cut boot time for the software firm’s new operating system, says EE Times.
The MH80 Series drive comes in 80-Gbyte, 120-Gbyte, and 160-Gbyte capacities, and the flash portion will be available in 128-Mbyte or 256-Mbyte capacities, says the story.
It’s combined with a OneNAND Flash cache and Microsoft’s ReadyDrive software.
The MH80 drives are designed for use in laptop PCs and will work with the ReadyDrive feature in the new Windows Vista operating system, says Computerworld., adding:
“With ReadyDrive, the flash memory acts as a temporary cache enabling the number of disk accesses to be cut. This means the drive spends less time in motion and therefore uses less power. Samsung claims the system cuts power consumption by 70% to 90%. Because data can quickly be stored and retrieved from the flash memory, ReadyDrive should also allow PCs to wake up faster from sleep mode.”
