Canadian online tax system crashes

p2pnet.net news:- What’s being described as a ‘computer glitch’ means many Canadians can’t file their income tax returns online.

But, “There is no indication that this situation was caused by intrusion, hacking, or computer virus,” the Canadian Press has commissioner Michel Dorais saying.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) system went down sometime Sunday night or Monday morning and, “We have now traced the source of the problem to software maintenance conducted on March 4, 2007,” says a CRA statement. “We are currently working to bring all systems back online gradually.”

Currently, Canadians can’t file personal returns electronically by NETFILE, TELEFILE or EFILE and, “Until the problem is resolved, we cannot process returns filed on paper, or returns filed electronically before the system interruption,” says the agency.

Then comes the really bad news:’

“Refunds will be delayed until processing is resumed.”

But, “We expect that all benefit payments, including the March 20 Universal Child Care Benefit and Canada Child Tax Benefit and the April 5 Goods and Services Tax / Harmonized Sales Tax Credit, will be made on time and without interruption,” says the CRA, adding:

“It is too soon to speculate on whether the filing deadline will be extended. The CRA fully expects to restore all services well in advance of the filing deadline.”

Slashdot Slashdot it!
