File-share networks Netsky threat

p2pnet.net News:- F-secure’s Mikko Hypponen says he expects file-sharing sites targetted under a new Netsky onslaught to fair badly because they’re “relatively small companies that will not have the necessary infrastructure to survive a large DDoS attack”.

Sites such as Kazaa and eDonkey were bracing for attacks today, says ZDNet UK here.

Morpheus is one of the leading commercial p2p sites but, “It’s news to us,” spokesman Brian O’Neal told p2pnet. “I’m always dubious when I hear file sharing sites are being attacked.”

Netsky.Q appeared on 29 March and is programmed to launch on sites that distribute either file-sharing clients or hacking and cracking tools, says the report, going on:

“Kazaa and eDonkey are its best-known targets and the attack is scheduled to last for six days. However, they will get only a short break because Netsky.T, which was discovered on Tuesday, will launch a new DDoS attack from 14 April. This attack is scheduled to last for 10 days.

These versions of Netsky are engineered to attack only Kazaa’s and eDonkey’s main Web sites, so their actual file-sharing networks won’t be affected, meaning users should be able to continue swapping files without disruption, says the story.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

    Sophos posted the alert a couple days ago. If only people would scan attachments from unknown sources BEFORE opening them!!! personally getting a little sick and tired of all the virii related spam that gets sent to my mail box because some dimwit saw a new email and opened it before scanning it.

    Getting tired of the Blaster worm related pings to my firewall (anyone else noticing RPC BIND attacks lately?), setting it off upwards of 30 times a day … for months. Why cant people keep their OS up-to-date with freely available security releases from windows? Why cant they keep their virus definitions up-to-date?

    Why do users like me have to deal with consequences of people who fall victim to these vulnerbilities. Not hard to learn how to avoid the majority of this.

    <end of rant >

    …for now ;)
