Sony PS3 ‘mugging’ fears
p2pnet.net news:- Sony’s PlayStation 3 arrives in Europe tomorrow, with a special midnight launch planned for Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street, London.
But at ã425 (today, about $837), it’s so expensive it’s well worth stealing and there are “genuine concerns,” said GamesIndustry.biz.
Police don’t want to see buyers being mugged on their way home.
“We do not support these midnight launches, that is the bottom line,” the story has a Marylebone, London, spokesman saying. “We don’t want people walking around London with expensive pieces of equipment late at night.”
A Westminster Council source, “confirmed that there have been meetings with Sony and the police,” says GamesIndustry.biz. “We have to make a risk assessment. There is lots of talking at the moment.
“It’s an advert for muggers, basically.”
But while Game and HMV will open their doors early on Friday morning, Virgin is letting buyers camp out on the lower ground floor of its flagship Oxford Street store, says Vnunet.com.
The lower ground floor of the store will be, “turned into a campsite and fans will be treated to refreshments and entertainment,” says the story.
“Sony has admitted that the European version of its PlayStation 3 console will not play as many old PlayStation 2 games as the versions already launched in the US and Japan,” said an earlier Vnunet.com post.
“The electronics firm said that PS3 consoles built for the European market are slightly different to those in other regions because they use software to carry out some of the functions of the dedicated chips.”
PS3s in the US come in at $500 for a version with a 60-gig hard drive, and $600 for one with 20Gb hard drive.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360 also has two versions, one with a 20Gb hard drive at $400, and another with no hard drive for $300.
