ICANN ponders .XXX. Again
p2pnet.net news:- .xxx is back in the news again.
While the US, “is regarded (by Americans anyway) as having invented the internet, the US controlled Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has been so slow in developing and authorizing new TDLs,” wrote p2pnet’s Alex H almost a year back.
“The .xxx domain was previously shelved last year after a prolonged campaign by conservative Christian groups and last week it was delayed again at an ICANN meeting in New Zealand,” he went on.
ICANN has twice thrown out “.xxx” proposals since 2000, “and already has discussed the latest version during three, closed-door teleconference meetings this year,” says Associated Press.
Now, “Government advisers deliberated behind closed doors Wednesday but issued no public statement on a plan to give the online back alleys their own home through a voluntary ‘.xxx’ Internet address,” it says.
“A formal communique was expected Thursday from the Governmental Advisory Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN chairman Vinton Cerf told The Associated Press in an e-mail.”
The story has ICM chairman and ceo Stuart Lawley saying he’s spoken to several GAC members, “and concluded ‘most GAC members are tired of the .xxx issue, and individual countries’ positions seem to be fairly fixed’.”
Adult content would be easier to regulate if it had its own “cordoned section,” IDG News has supporters saying.
But, the story goes on, “critics including religious leaders say the move could make adult content too easy to find, while others complain that increased filtering could harm the sites’ right to freedom of speech.”
Friday is the dayt the board is expects to make up its collective mind how to go.
