Dell takes the Linux route

p2pnet.net news:- The people have spoken, and they want Linux.

So says Dell, quoting a survey in which more than 70$ of the 100,000 respondents said they’d want a Dell PC with Linux, “for both home and office use,” says TopTechNews.

Dell now says it’ll soon begin offering Linux on select desktop and laptop PCs, says the story, going on”

“Although Dell already offers the Linux open-source operating system (OS) for servers and its Precision workstation line, Linux is not offered as an option for the majority of its PCs.

“The company said it will indicate in the coming weeks which Linux distributions or versions will be available, which systems will be offered, and what the details will be for testing and certification.”

But, “Dell won’t kick Microsoft out of bed for eating crackers,” says Michael Singer in InformationWeek, going on, “Desktop Linux is still immature and there are very few up-sell benefits for Dell salespeople and online orders when it comes to a Linux box.

“To be fair, Dell will successfully sell a percentage of Linux PCs starting either later this year or next. How many that will be remains to be seen. We in the tech press will ponder and pontificate about its significance. But unless Windows Vista is a total bomb (which it might turn out to be) or Windows XP develops so many security holes that hackers dismiss it as Swiss cheese, Microsoft is still the Mack Daddy of Dell.”

And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. 1. Reader's Write Says:

With all marketing crap pre-loaded, Dell machines are craputers ( http://www.cexx.org/craputer.htm ) and do not seem to belong to the user.

And I really wonder whether the Linux machines are going to change that. Linux itself does make the system belong to its user, but Dell may change that to match the state of affairs in Windows Dell world.

    “Desktop Linux is still immature?”
What the fuck kind of bullshit is THAT??? I use Mepis, before that Knoppix, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora-Core for a small amount of time, etc…..and in NO way can the experience be described as “immature.”

Did you ever notice that the “mainstream media” go out of their way to kiss Microsoft’s ass (especially with backhanded ‘compliments’ like the above article.) The “Mainstream” is intent on sucking Bill Gate’s cock, so they hype up Microsoft’s vanishingly-small ’successes’, and continually downplay Linux at every opportunity.

It’s a goddamn shame, and it’s way past time for people to get aggressive about Linux advocacy. (A good step in that direction would be to stop wtih the moronic debate over “Linux vs. Gnu/Linux” and “Opensource Vs. free software” — I don’t believe in “better living through wordgames”. Political correctness is bullshit, no matter where it originates. These pernicious little wordgames make the Linux “scene” look stupid and cultish (which lets Microsoft look more credible than they otherwise would.)
