Then we quoted The Economist which said, “Music charts began as a way for record labels to market their acts.

Nice one. File sharing, eh? So Arctic Monkeys owes Net music fans. Big Time.
Our post was in 2005 and the band is now Major, which means it’s probably time it gave a little back to the people who made it what it is. Right?
Wrong.
Instead, Arctic Monkeys is giving the finger to fans. Or to put it another way, it’s shitting on it’s own doorstep.
“About to leak a copy of the new Arctic Monkeys album on the net?” - asks The Times Online? “Don’t bother,” it says, “unless you’re willing to risk a knock on the door from the Web Sheriff.”
Because, “when you have a million-selling album under your belt, letting your songs spread like a virus over the web doesn’t seem so cool and …
… Security surrounding Favourite Worst Nightmare, the hotly anticipated follow-up, is such that music writers must surrender to Arctic Monkeys’ London HQ for an advance hearing.
Now cutting-edge bands who built a following by letting fans trade MP3 song files are secretly hiring web enforcers to track down and remove unauthorised leaks that might destroy album sales.
The web detectives trace the source of a leak and individuals found to have deliberately spread copyright-protected material receive a personal visit followed by legal threats.
Nice one.
But anyone who shares Arctic Monkeys and gets a threatening Web Sheriff missive as a result might think about following The Pirate Bay’s example.

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

As a young struggling band they idealistically waved the “liberal” flag. Now that they have amassed a pile of filthy lucre, they have something to conserve… Money begets greed. It’s just human nature.

I’m a conservative. Arctic Monkeys have nothing in common with being a conservative. Please don’t confuse being a Republican with being conservative. They are two totally different things. BTW, I’m also a big supporter of file sharing. I believe that the morally bankrupt media cartel deserves to be put out of business. I also happen to agree with a reader’s post regarding 10yrold Kylee Andersen being deposed. That poster stated that the industry is a bunch of child molesters.

I find this interesting that one can draw a very similar but not exact theme with Metallicia. They too, had real heart burn with the p2p crowd. Right after they came out with the issue they felt they had a problem with, fans dropped them like a hot potato.
Today you don’t hardly hear of Metallicia. They’re another group that are used-to-bees, as much for their attitude as for their lack of staying power. Simply they lost touch with their fans and their fans lost touch with them.
It appears the Arctic Monkeys will follow the same trend of forgetting what is important. That happens when greed gets in the way of common sense. This group made it big without help of the major cartels. Now that the cartels have signed them (and speculation would have it put pressure on the group to come out against file sharing) they too have lost touch with their roots of what made them successful. Like the other group mentioned here, they too will head down the path of obscurity.
As with former artists, there will soon arrive the time when the group is hollering, “Hey, remember me? We were the ones that did (insert whatever here).” What the fans will remember is the traitor-like actions that followed their because of their interests. So the fans will no longer be fans, moving on in hopes of finding some group that does not sell out and with the remembrance of a new insight of what greed can do.
Good luck Arctic Monkeys, without fans you go back to the obscurity you had when you began to seek your fame and fortune.

Actually, I think Metallica’s real downfall was bringing out a PoS album like “St. Anger”. Most of the Metallica fans I know merely said “meh” at the p2p debacle, and carried on DLing their stuff anyway, or copying it from friends (lol). But when St. Anger came out, and Lars Ulrich (who’s not the best drummer anyway, let’s be honest) had all but two of his drums taken away (that’s what it sounded like), even the most devoted of the ‘tallica fans I know said “Time to find a new favourite band”.

The Arctic Monkeys now have money to conserve, and IMHO have become fiscally conservative. I stand by the opinion in my original post.

Well the arctic monkeys are being given the finger back. The album is already one torrent websites. I’ve got it and its pretty decent! 505 is really good! My favourite off the album.

hey if u do get cought they cannot do anything about it. cos they cannt prove u downloaded it it they can prove the net is i your name the pc is but anyone can use a pc i belive there are loop holes ppl im a huge fan of the flie sharing culte i bleive it will change the wrold no matter wat. sharing is higer than the doller higer that any gov rember one thing ppl share flies that is aobve all gov
