Barney pic suddenly popular

p2pnet.net news:- Every now and then I check my StatCounter to get a rough idea of what’s going where and for the past few weeks, I’ve been noticing one item, an image posted a couple of years ago, is being constantly and consistently grabbed, mostly, but not entirely, by Google.

It’s the Barney pic on the right, and it’s a spoof on Japan’s Mori Chack Gloomy bears.

Barney has to be one of the most obnoxious kids’ show ever made. Ask any mum or dad.

“I’ll sue you, you sue me, Oh what fun the suits will be,” says the p2pnet post in which the pic appears. It dates back to 2005, and goes on,

“That’s the latest refrain from Barney, the big, purple dinosaur adored by kids and loathed by their parents.

” ‘Barney’s lawyers at the New York firm of Gibney, Anthony and Flaherty sent stiff warning letters last week to Web sites displaying less-than-flattering images of the plump saurian,’ says CNET News.

” ‘Your Web site depicts a plush Barney toy in a violent manner or position,’ Matthew Carlin wrote Tuesday on behalf of Lyons Partnership, which owns the Barney trademark. ‘We are writing to request that you remove this violent content toward Barney on your Web site’.”

Our post points to another which kicks off:

“I was in Japan over the summer, spending time with a friend of mine,” said a p2pnet Reader’s Write in a post on Japanese suicide pacts. “I was shocked to see that a lot of Japanese school girls carry around ‘Gloomy Bear’!” – the comment post continued. “Its a little ‘Japanified’ bear that has really long claws and kills people, and children seem to love him for it. Japanese girls consider this VERY cute… and when I asked them why, they had no answer… just repeated ‘very cute’.”

The kiddie kill bear is still around and this current animated Mori Chack/Pony Canyon pic shows Gloomy destroying a kid. Says the caption:

“GLOOMY” is Pity’s pet bear. His height is about 7 ft.

He is well trained…except he has a hard time remembering not to attack humans.

What’s going on?

Cheers!
Jon

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

Kids will be kids! even if it’s slightly twisted and they’re being preyed upon by corporations who’s only concern is grooming them to be the next wave of consumers

  2. Reader's Write Says:

What I don’t understand is why parents get their kids to watch this smut if they themselves hate it so much. The target audience (3 to 7) isn’t smart enough t find sources of entertainment that aren’t introduced by the parents themselves (although that may have changed in this new Internet age), so it is the parents who ultimately tune the sets to this stuff for their children to watch, as their peers are not yet smart enough to recommend where to find it (with regards to channel and time, anyway).

Bottom line: if you don’t want your kids watching Barney, don’t introduce ti to them. By the time they find out about it through other means, they will have outgrown the target audience and will have ultimately devised a hatred of it that is similar to that of the parents themselves.
