Monk seal satellite tracking site
p2pnet.net news:- The Hawaiian monk seal is a, “biological treasure unique to the Hawaiian Archipelago” and it’s in trouble, says the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center.
The seals’ population is now at its lowest level in recorded history, about 1,200 seals, says the center, going on:
“Unless the current trajectory of population numbers is reversed, the species’ abundance is expected to fall below 1000 in the next four years. Currently, a monk seal pup’s chance of surviving to the reproductive age of seven to ten years is less than one in five.”
With that in mind, Monk seal scientists are using a satellite tracking program to watch female pups released into the wild at Midway Atoll. And the seals’ progress will be monitored a updated twice weekly on special web pages.
For example, the pic on the right shows what ‘PO22′ (inset) has been up to.
And the one on the left shows PO22 (top) and PO26, fraternal twins born almost exactly a year ago on Spit Island, Midway Atoll.
“Twinning in monk seals is a rare event – this was only the fourth pair known,” says the web page.
