Playfair is back
p2pnet.net News:- Playfair is back, thanks to Sarovar.org, billed as “India’s first portal to host projects under Free/Open source licenses”.
Apple Computer sent a Cease & Desist letter to SourceForge where Playfair was being developed and Pow! Down it went..
Just in case anything else nasty happens, you can download playfair-0.4.tar.gz here Or you can do the same at the Sarovar site where the nuts and bolts are now hosted.
The news comes via an anonymous poster here (thanks : )
Apple’s Cease and Desist letter reads in part, “… because the playfair computer program is illegal under the anticircumvention provisions of the DMCA, we demand that you immediately remove the playfair computer program from the SourceForge web site, and that you give assurance that your site does not contain, and will not contain, either any copies of the playfair computer program or any direct or indirect links from which the playfair computer program may be downloaded or otherwise publicly distributed.
“Please note that, because the playfair computer program is illegal under the DMCA, its availability through the SourceForge web site constitutes a violation of the provisions of Section 2 of the SourceForge.net Terms and Conditions of Use (the ‘Terms’). Pursuant to the request of SourceForge in Section 25 of the Terms, we are copying this letter to the SourceForge.net Support Manager at staff@sourceforge.net to provide notice of the foregoing violation of the Terms.
“Please confirm to the undersigned in writing no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2004 that you have complied with the foregoing demands. Because of the substantial damage to Apple that may occur from distribution of this unlawful computer program, your timely compliance is critical to protecting Apple?s rights, and your failure to timely comply would constitute willful infringement that could subject you to additional penalties.”
You can also download the whole thing here.
In the meanwhile, since Sarovar.org has been good enough to take Playfair on, here’s a bit of info.
It’s located in Trivandrum, India and hosted at Asianet data center. Sarovar.org is customised, installed and maintained by Linuxense as part of their community services and sponsored by River Valley Technologies.
Good on ya, guys.

I would just like to mention, you have to first BUY the files this program decrypts. Since you OWN it, you can convert it to any media you see fit, including mp3 so you don’t have to buy an i-pod to listen.
just my $.02

Buy song FROM APPLE using your credit card. Put song on YOUR preferred player. Listen w/ headphones. Do not share. This is fair use. I understand people wanting apple to succeed w/ itms, but preventing people who BUY songs from doing what they want w/o sharing is ridiculous. I only buy things if I know I can convert it to whatever player I get later. Open not DRM AAC is the deal. So w/ new itms 4.5 DRM how long until we get a solution for those of us ponying up the $ to Apple?
