CBS wants in on the Net
p2pnet.net news:- Having completely missed the boat at the beginning of the online entertainment revolution, like just about every other corporate entity, CBS is now trying to make up lost ground by getting CBS shows picked up.
“The new deals represent the latest effort by traditional broadcasters and other media companies to harness the power of the Internet to show video and to combat the unauthorized viewing of TV shows on video-sharing sites such as YouTube, which is owned by Google Inc,” says Associated Press, going on:
“CBS said it would begin distributing current shows including the evening news broadcast with Katie Couric as well as other programs from its TV library through online partners including Microsoft Corp.’s MSN; Time Warner Inc.’s AOL unit; CNET Networks Inc.”
Also named is Joost, founded by the creators of eBay’s Skype, and Kazaa, the new corporate p2p application.
“CBS has also been in discussions with a separate company created by News Corp., owner of the Fox broadcast network and many other media businesses, and General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal,” says the story, adding:
“That company, which has not yet been named, intends to distribute shows from NBC, Fox as well as movies through its own network of online partners.”
No mention is made of the fact that thanks to independent sites and the p2p networks, just about every TV show with any merit goes online almost automatically as soon as it’s aired, if not before.
