Music phones threaten iPod

p2pnet.net news:- Apple’s iPod rules, for the moment. But will its popularity be enough to maintain its dominant position in the face of growing acceptance of cool, new music phones?

Sony Ericsson was expected to report results showing a much faster take-up of sales for its Walkman range of music-playing phones than Apple managed with the iPod, says The Times Online. The company sold 17m Walkman phones last year, and has sold more than 20m since they were first introduced just over 18 months ago, it says, going on, “Apple had sold fewer than 4m iPods even though the device was already famous.

“The acceleration in sales only really began with the launch of the iPod mini in 2004 and its replacement, the iPod nano, in the autumn of 2005.”

Sony Ericsson has made the biggest concerted push on marketing music phones and, “The styling of its ultra-slim w880i puts it on a par with the similar-sized iPod nano - but the Sony Ericsson phone also has a 2 megapixel camera and is available cheaply on many contract tariffs.”

In addition, Sony Ericsson has sold a further 43 million music-playing phones without the Walkman brand but, “even when these are included, it was still outsold by Nokia,” The Times Online goes on.

“The Finnish hand-set giant estimates it sold 70m music-capable phones last year, which makes it the world’s biggest maker of MP3 players.

Nokia research suggests that 60% of customers now use their phone’s music-playing capabilities, and 2-gig memory cards are available for for £15 (close to $30 today).

Tired of being treated like a criminal? They depend on you, not the other way around. Don’t buy their ‘product’. Do bug your local politicians. Use emails, snail-mail, phone calls, faxes, IM, stop them in the street, blog. And if you’re into organizing, organize petitions, organize demonstrations and then turn up on your local political rep’s doorstep, making sure you’ve contacted your local tv/radio station/newspaper in advance. Don’t just complain. Do something!

I discourage anyone from buying anything Sony. I no longer do. Sony has proven that it is no longer worthy of being trusted. What will that company do next? Spy on our calls? Listen to our conversations while not on the phone? Upload our music play list for nefarious purposes? Snoop on our contact lists? The list goes on. The company has been caught once spying on people. I for one will not be fooled again.

There are other music phones out there. If there were not, then I’d just have to use my good ole’ mp3 player.

I dont own an mp3 player and probably never will. I dont have the urge to listen to music every where I go. I do have a pocket pc cell phone that I can listen to music or podcasts to if I wanted to.
