StationRipper: Ripping Last.fm!
p2pnet.net news:- StationRipper creator Greg Ratajik says his application, which allows users to record up to 600 Shoutcast radio and TV streams, can now handle Last.fm.
It’s a kind of p2p alternative, we said almost exactly two years ago when StationRipper first arrived on the scene, causing a major stir, so, “naturally you’d think the Big Music cartel, which doesn’t like anyone listening to anything it doesn’t have a large piece of, would have been all over Ratajik. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.”
And StationRipper is still around, obviously, and, “It lets users create a custom radio station based on what they like to hear,” Ratajik told p2pnet. “This works great,” he promises. “It creates perfect 128 bit mp3s.”
“And One HUGE new thing is StationPortal.com. This is the site that now comes up inside StationRipper (and is can be used as a stand-alone site). It’ll show you a list of what’s currently playing on all radio stations.
“It has a nifty AJAX app that keeps updating with what radio stations are playing (as they play it!), and has a Google Maps Mashup that shows what the stations are playing (live!), on a Google Map.”
Ratajik says StationPortal is also good for searches.
“It’s really handy in that you can find stations that play songs that you like,” he says. “So if a station played a song by Gwen Stefani in the last few hours, say, it’s likely to play more – and songs similar to hers. And it can both be used inside StationRipper to record the stations, and in the browser to listen to the stations.”
StationRipper also now hooks into Twitter, he states, adding:
“We have of course continued to improve track cutting, commercial detection, and general enhancements to the software.”
But even with the improvements, pricing hasn’t changed.
There’s still a free version, a $20 version and a $30 version that includes life-time upgrades, and a chance to win a iPod Nano.
“One thing I’m watching closely is the insane fees internet radio is having to pay now,” Ratajik told us. “It was bad before, but it’s now over the top. I can only hope the EFF and others are able work towards a better deal as the way things are heading now, there soon won’t be any US-based internet radio.”
