"He" being my friend. He doesn't want to talk about it right now though, so I can't detail much about what happened.

At 9:29 a.m., the university sent an e-mail warning students that a gunman was on the loose and to stay indoors. At about that time, a shooter opened fire at the engineering school's Norris Hall, killing 31 people. Several students leapt to safety from upper stories, and the gunman's body was later found at the building, Flinchum said.

Not to mention that it's only the philosophical nihilism taught in academia that supports this sort of thing.

If a sane member of the student body or faculty also had a gun, he or she could have put an end to the massacre. Blaming a weapon for the massacre is like blaming silverware for Rosie O'Donnell being fat. I do agree with you that violence-glorifying media probably had a role.

There was less violence in the so called Wild West than there is today, and many more people back then carried guns.

If you live in a culture that allows people to walk into a gun shop and legally buy an assault weapon and one that glorifies violence on TV and in movies what do you expect? Add a heath care system that provides limited access for people with mental health problems and you have a recipe for disaster.

I go to Virginia Tech, and I can honestly say that the atmosphere here is one of disruption and some remorse, although it is far from panic. I personally wasn't in the area at the time (although I was in a nearby building on campus), but I know someone who says that they were, and he was pretty messed up by the experience. Everybody else here is now either watching the news with everybody else or just trying to enjoy their day off.
