Mobile phones with notebook power

p2pnet.net News:- Chipzilla says it’s brought note-book power to mobile phones with a chip designed to bring 3D graphics to handhelds and PDAs.

PXA27x (Bulverde by another name : ) is Intel’s next-generation Xscale processor with features able to increase mobile phone battery life, allow DVD-quality video playback, “and it also has wireless in mind,” writes LinuXProX in the OverclockersCLub here, going on that David Rogers, an Intel wireless marketing manager, says, “We designed these chips from the ground up for and with cell phone makers, and they focus on three things performance/power consumption, multimedia playback and security.”

In an ExtremeTech story here, Rogers says the most recent addition to the architecture was a security subsystem – a programmable random number generator, secure memory for storing cryptographic keys and other data, as well as a trusted ROM that checks to make sure the system software contains no unauthorized code.

Previous versions of the Xscale allowed customers to perform VPN functions on system software; now, the technology will allow VPN functions to be isolated in a protected portion of the chip, Rogers says in the ExtremeTech.

Two versions of the PXA270 will be produced, one with the security system enabled and one without. The version with the “Wireless Trusted Platform”, as Intel calls it, will include 32 Kbytes of protected boot ROM for storing code.

The Bulverde itself will be available in four speeds, from 312 MHz up to 624 MHz, Rogers added, saying Chipzilla was “backing off” on providing power consumption numbers, typically expressed in megawatts per megahertz, as the applications process

Bulverdewill also take advantage of phones with built-in cameras to allow live video conferencing, says Rogers, adding that the chip will allow devices to use use virtual private network software services to safely access corporate networks.

“The PXA270 chips will range in speeds from 312MHz up to 624MHz!,” says LinuXProX. “To think, my Dell Pocket PC isn’t even that fast :)
